Sewer Line Repair & Replacement in Plano, TX
Sewer line repair in Plano is mostly an east-side problem, and it comes down to what the pipe is made of.
The neighbourhoods around downtown and Haggard Park predate most of Collin County. They were built when cast iron drainage was standard, and cast iron has a finite life. West and north Plano, built decades later on PVC, rarely sees the same failures.

Signs Your Sewer Line Is Failing
- Several drains running slow at the same time, not one fixture
- A toilet gurgling when the washing machine or shower drains
- Sewage smell in the yard, or at the lowest drain in the house
- A patch of lawn greener, softer, or soggier than the rest
- Backups that keep returning after being cleared
- Sewage coming up into a tub or shower — call immediately
One slow drain is local to that fixture. Several at once means the main line.
How Cast Iron Actually Fails
It’s a progression, not an event, and recognising the stage you’re at is most of the decision.
Cast iron corrodes from the inside into a rough, ridged surface. Waste that would slide through smooth PVC catches on it. The usable diameter narrows year by year, so the line clogs a little more easily each time.
The tell isn’t a single backup. It’s the interval shrinking. A line that needed attention every few years starts needing it annually, then every few months. That accelerating pattern is the pipe telling you where it is in its life.
Cracks and separations come later, usually helped along by Blackland Prairie clay shifting with every wet and dry cycle. Rigid, aging pipe doesn’t tolerate that movement. Modern PVC flexes with it, which is why newer Plano construction rarely fails this way.
In the oldest east Plano properties the line out to the main may be clay tile — short sections joined end to end, where the joints separate and tree roots find the moisture escaping. Roots don’t break into sound pipe. They exploit a defect that’s already there.
We Camera the Line First
There are three possible answers, and they cost very different amounts:
Roots or a blockage in sound pipe. Clearing and a plan for the roots. Hydro jetting removes the root mass rather than punching through it.
One failed section. A spot repair, not a full replacement.
A line at the end of its life. Replacement, or lining where the host pipe still holds its shape.
Nobody can tell those apart from the fixture. A camera inspection costs a small fraction of a replacement and you watch the screen with the technician.
If you’re in west or north Plano and someone quotes a full sewer replacement, get it scoped first. PVC usually clogs or develops a low spot rather than failing outright, and those are very different repairs.
Permits and Registration in Plano
Plano requires contractors to be registered with the city before performing work, and runs permits and inspection scheduling through the eTRAKiT portal.
Wise Choice Plumbing & Rooter holds an active Plano contractor registration. You can look us up — or anyone — in eTRAKiT before you hire, and track your own permit and inspection on your address.
Sewer work is permitted work. We pull it and schedule the inspection.
Plano Sewer Line FAQs
How do I know if it's a clog or a failing line?
Frequency. A one-off blockage after something went down the drain is a clog. A line that backs up, clears, and backs up again within months has a structural cause — roots, a crack, or a low spot holding water. If clearing it buys you three months at a time, that’s your answer.
Can a cast iron line be relined instead of replaced?
Often, yes. Lining installs a new pipe inside the existing one with minimal digging, and it works when the host pipe still holds its shape. A collapsed line, or one with a significant belly, has to be dug. The camera determines which, which is another reason to scope before pricing.
Will you have to dig up my driveway?
Only if the line runs under it and lining isn’t viable. Once we’ve located and scoped the line we look at routes that avoid paved surfaces first, because that work is expensive and disruptive. You’ll get the options priced.
How old are the sewer lines in east Plano?
Depends on the street, but the neighbourhoods near downtown and Haggard Park are among the oldest housing in Collin County. Cast iron typically lasts fifty to seventy-five years, so a good deal of that stock is inside the window where the original material starts reaching its limit.
My drains are slow but nothing has backed up. How urgent is that?
Not an emergency, but worth scoping rather than ignoring. Slow drainage across several fixtures is usually an early stage of the same progression, and finding out whether you’re years or months away is inexpensive compared with an emergency replacement on a weekend.
Does the city own any part of my sewer line?
Generally the city owns the main and you own the lateral running from the house to it, which means the section under your yard is your repair. If you’re unsure where responsibility falls on your property, it’s worth establishing before work is scheduled rather than after.
