What does the LC code mean on my Rinnai tankless water heater?
LC means scale has built up inside the heat exchanger and the unit needs flushing. It’s the only Rinnai code that lets the heater keep running — the display alternates between LC and your temperature setting, and the controller beeps.
Because you still get hot water, it’s easy to put off. Cycling the power clears it for a while and you can override it. Eventually the unit shuts down anyway to protect itself, and at that point you may be looking at a heat exchanger replacement rather than a flush. If you’re seeing LC, get it descaled. It’s far cheaper than what comes next.
My tankless water heater is showing code 11. What's wrong?
Code 11 on a Rinnai, Rheem, or Noritz means the unit tried to light and never sensed a flame. Usual causes are gas supply, a blocked vent or air intake, or low water flow through a dirty inlet filter.
Two things worth checking yourself. Make sure the main gas valve is fully open — it gets partly closed during other work more often than you’d think. And check your other gas appliances. If the stove and furnace are out too, you have a gas supply problem rather than a water heater problem.
What does E003 mean on my Navien?
E003 is Navien’s ignition failure code — the same fault as code 11 on other brands. The unit attempted to fire and didn’t detect a flame.
Check that gas is on and reaching other appliances first. Beyond that, the common causes are a dirty flame rod, a blocked vent or intake, or insufficient gas pressure at the unit. Diagnosing which one usually means opening the cabinet and testing gas pressure under load, so it’s not a homeowner job past the basic checks.
Why does my tankless keep throwing code 12?
Code 12 means the unit lit and then lost the flame right away. A dirty flame sensor and a venting restriction are common causes, but the one to take seriously is gas pressure dropping under load.
If your unit has thrown code 12 since the day it was installed, an undersized gas line is the first thing to look at. A tankless heater needs far more gas flow than the tank it replaced, and if the original line was never upsized the unit starves at full fire. That’s an installation problem showing up as a repair, and resetting it won’t fix it.
Can I reset my tankless water heater myself?
Yes. Cycling the power at the breaker clears most codes, and on some models there’s a reset on the controller.
What a reset doesn’t do is fix anything. The unit stored that code because a sensor detected a real condition. If the same code comes back within a few days, the cause is still there and the heater will keep shutting itself down until it’s addressed. Repeated overriding is how a cheap descaling turns into an expensive part.
Does an error code mean I need a new tankless water heater?
Usually not. Most codes point at something serviceable — a scaled heat exchanger, a dirty flame rod, a clogged inlet filter, a flow sensor, an igniter.
The expensive failure is a cracked or corroded heat exchanger, and that’s a minority of the calls we run. A lot of “you need a new unit” quotes in this market are a heat exchanger that needed flushing two years ago. Get the code diagnosed before you price a replacement, and ask to be shown what’s actually wrong.
How often should a tankless water heater be descaled in Dallas?
Once a year. Manufacturers call for annual descaling in hard water areas and North Texas qualifies — the North Texas Municipal Water District, which supplies much of the metro, publishes regional hardness up to 202 ppm, roughly 11 to 12 grains per gallon.
A tankless heat exchanger pushes water through narrow passages, so there’s very little room for mineral deposits before flow starts restricting. Annual flushing is the single biggest factor in whether your unit reaches its expected lifespan.
Why does my hot water go hot, then cold, then hot again?
Often called the cold water sandwich. The usual causes are scale narrowing the heat exchanger, a flow sensor that’s scaled over and misreading demand, or a unit undersized for running two hot water fixtures at once.
If it’s got noticeably worse over time rather than always being that way, it points at scale and the unit is overdue for descaling. If it’s been like that since installation, sizing is the more likely culprit.
How long should a tankless water heater last?
Around 20 years with annual maintenance, against 8 to 12 for a typical tank.
Units that fail at 8 or 10 years here have almost always never been descaled. If yours is failing well short of 20, that’s usually a maintenance history problem rather than a bad unit — worth knowing before you buy the same model again and repeat the cycle.
What size tankless water heater do I need?
It depends on how much hot water you run at the same time and how cold your incoming water gets, not on your home’s square footage.
Roughly, a shower uses 1.5 to 2.5 gallons a minute, a kitchen sink about 1.5, and a washing machine around 2. Add up a realistic worst case for your household. The other half is temperature rise — incoming water is much colder in January than July, so a unit sized on summer conditions runs out in winter. We size for winter.
Will a tankless water heater lower my gas bill?
Somewhat. A tankless only fires when you use hot water, so you stop paying to keep 50 gallons hot around the clock, including the hours nobody’s home.
Be realistic about the scale, though. The savings are real but modest, and they don’t usually pay back the installation on their own. The stronger reasons to switch are hot water that doesn’t run out, roughly twice the service life, the floor space, and not having 50 gallons to dump on your floor when the unit eventually fails.
Can I install a tankless water heater myself?
We’d strongly advise against it, and not just for warranty reasons. Gas line sizing, venting, and combustion air are safety items — getting them wrong creates a carbon monoxide risk, not just a performance problem.
A conversion also needs permits and inspection, and most manufacturers void the warranty on an unlicensed install. Descaling is genuinely a homeowner-friendly job, and we’re happy to show you how while we’re there. The installation isn’t.
